A Timbers blog post. I know shocking right?
I know, I’ve not written on the old NASL, or it’s connections to the sport, in a while, but the European game is still there, so I had to stay on topic. And that’s hard for someone who is ADD. No, I don’t mean I’m math. One of the great clubs in the American game is Portland. Their fans are nuts, I mean who else has let on and off (club dying for a couple times) a man with a chainsaw into the matches? You couldn’t pull that past the ushers in Europe. I mean come on?
Not saying that, this is unique, just look at the history of the game, and all the stuff the old NASL would do. Sometime that might be another blog for me. But let’s not get to far ahead. While I’m not a big MLS fan, I do watch Philadelphia Union games when I can (I have a radio spot on a Union radio show), and will look in on Portland Timber games. (itunes has the station that their games are played on, on their radio stream). So there’s a lot there for me to digest.
Also, just the love of the supporters is what makes the Timbers a fun. Look up the Timbers Army when you are next at your cubicle at work. I know it breaks the tradition of surfing facebook at work. Just for once you can do something smart in your “break times” It’s a fun thing to see them singing the national anthem or the chants with the fireworks. Well, that or the flairs, which is awesome.
Oh in their first year, in the first time they existed, (this is the fourth time the club has been in existence) they ran all the way to the 1975 Soccer Bowl (league championship game) against Tampa Bay Rowdies. There’s another team that I haven’t written on in a while. All in due time. But that was the stable franchise in the Pacific Northwest for a very long time.
That man that has a chainsaw at the matches? Started out with Timber Jim. Well, instead of writing about it, let’s just see it.
And that was during a match. Timber Jim has since retired, and turned it over to Timber Joey.
Can’t you wait to see that? Well, watch the games they play, ok, so they aren’t that good right now, but the fandom will get you into it.
